The Nutcracker Ballet

On Christmas Eve, the Von Stahlbaums bid their good-byes to relatives and friends following an extraordinary celebration at their home. Grand festivities are enjoyed by all in honor of both the Christmas holiday and Clara's birthday.

Clara's favorite present of the evening is a most unusual and enchanting Nutcracker doll given to her by her godfather, the mysterious Drosselmeyer. Tragedy strikes, however, when her brother Fritz's rough play breaks the Nutcracker doll. Dr. Drosselmeyer does his best to console the heartbroken Clara.

In the following scene, Clara is going to sleep with her beloved Nutcracker doll, but is awakened as the clock strikes midnight. Now, the room grows larger than life and all the mice in the house begin to attack her. The toy soldiers under the bed have also grown and led by the broken Nutcracker doll; they come to Clara's defense. The Nutcracker doll fights valiantly to save her, but is nearly killed by the vicious Mouse King. At the last minute, Clara saves the Nutcracker doll by rushing to his aid and throwing her slipper at the Mouse King.

Now, the Nutcracker doll becomes a Prince and guides Clara through the Land of Snow. Snow begins to fall and the Snow Queen and King, and Snowflakes dance around Clara, creating a dream-like scene for Clara's wonderful fantasy journey.

Clara and the Nutcracker Prince enter the Kingdom of Sweets and are welcomed by her Majesty, the Sugar Plum Fairy, and her subjects: angels, Chinese Tea, Pepperment Candy, Spanish Chocolates, Russian Trepak, Arabian coffee, and the colorful Flowers all present Clara with stunning performances before bidding her a fond farewell.

Professional performers from Ballet National De Cuba, South Africa's State Theatre Ballet Company, and the Louisville Ballet Company in Kentucky are traveling to rehearse with dancers from Midcoast Maine communities such as Belfast, Camden, Lincolnville, Rockport, and Thomaston. This is an exciting opportunity for young dancers to share their artistry with each other and with professional performers.

Beautiful costuming for ABC's "Nutcracker" is being created by professional wardrobe seamstresses as well as by talented local volunteers.
